Ruling on eating the meat of an animal struck with a hammer

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa No. ( 2770 )
Q: What is the ruling on eating the meat of an animal struck with a hammer, meaning: a cow struck on the head with an iron hammer in a slaughterhouse with the intention of slaughter? When the animal is struck with it, it falls to the ground and becomes unconscious, and the slaughterer waits for it to fall and says when slaughtering it: “In the name of Allah, and Allah is the Greatest.” Please inform us.
A: If the animal cannot be slaughtered according to the Islamic method except by striking it on the head with an iron hammer, it is permissible to strike it with it so that it can be slaughtered. Then, if it is found alive after falling, it is obligatory to slaughter it according to the customary Islamic method, and it is permissible to eat it as long as its slaughter has been completed and it has life in it. If its slaughter is not completed while it is alive, it is not eaten because it is a *muqawwadhah* (an animal killed by striking), and Allah has forbidden it in His saying:
Prohibited to you are dead animals, blood, the flesh of swine, and that which has been dedicated to other than Allah, and [those animals] killed by strangling or by a violent blowحُرِّمَتْ عَلَيْكُمُ الْمَيْتَةُ وَالدَّمُ وَلَحْمُ الْخِنْـزِيرِ وَمَا أُهِلَّ لِغَيْرِ اللَّهِ بِهِ وَالْمُنْخَنِقَةُ وَالْمَوْقُوذَةُ
[Al-Ma'idah 5:3]
the verse. If it is possible to slaughter it without striking it with a hammer or the like, it is not permissible to strike it with it because of the torture it inflicts on the animal. However, if that happens and its slaughter is completed according to the Islamic method, and it is alive after falling, it is permissible to eat it as mentioned before. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
