Q: It is mentioned in the hadith of Jabir ibn 'Abd Allah
Jabir b. 'Abdullah (Allah be pleased with them) reported Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) as saying in the Year of Victory while he was in Mecca: Verily Allah and His Messenger have forbidden the sale of wine, carcass, swine and idols, It was said: Allah's Messenger, you see that the fat of the carcass is used for coating the boats and varnishing the hides and people use it for lighting purposes, whereupon he said: No, it is forbidden, Then Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said: May Allah the Exalted and Majestic destroy the Jews; when Allah forbade the use of fat of the carcass for them, they melted it, and then sold it and made use of its price (received from it).
Sahih Muslim 1581a
. What is the wisdom behind the prohibition of the fats of carrion for coating ships, lighting, and similar uses other than eating? What is meant by the word: (jamaluhu), what is meant by carrion in the hadith, and is it permissible to benefit from the fats of a slaughtered animal in ways other than eating?

A: The scholars have unanimously agreed on the prohibition of eating carrion, or selling it, and this includes its fats. Fish and locusts are an exception to this, as it is permissible to eat their carrion and sell it; because the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) specified them. Also excluded from the prohibition is: eating carrion in a state of dire necessity, due to the saying of Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He):
Prohibited to you are dead animals, blood, the flesh of swineحُرِّمَتْ عَلَيْكُمُ الْمَيْتَةُ وَالدَّمُ وَلَحْمُ الْخِنْـزِيرِ
[Al-Ma'idah 5:3]
up to His saying (Glorified and Exalted is He):
But whoever is forced by severe hunger with no inclination to sin - then indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.فَمَنِ اضْطُرَّ فِي مَخْمَصَةٍ غَيْرَ مُتَجَانِفٍ لإِثْمٍ فَإِنَّ اللَّهَ غَفُورٌ رَحِيمٌ
[Al-Ma'idah 5:3]
, and His saying
(Glorified and Exalted is He):
while He has explained in detail to you what He has forbidden you, excepting that to which you are compelledوَقَدْ فَصَّلَ لَكُمْ مَا حَرَّمَ عَلَيْكُمْ إِلا مَا اضْطُرِرْتُمْ إِلَيْهِ
[Al-An'am 6:119]
, As for benefiting from the fats of carrion, or any part of it other than eating, the position of the majority of scholars is that it is forbidden to benefit from any of that, except what is specified by evidence, such as the skin of carrion if it is tanned. And for this reason, they interpreted the saying of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) in the hadith:
It is forbiddenهو حرام
as referring to benefiting from it. And the reason, and Allah knows best, for the prohibition of benefiting from the fats of carrion as mentioned in the hadith is its ritual impurity. So whatever is forbidden in its essence due to its impurity, its price is forbidden, and benefiting from it is forbidden, and consuming it is forbidden a fortiori. And the intended meaning of the saying of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him):
jamaluhuجملوه
is: they melted it. And the intended meaning of carrion (with the mīm open) is: every animal from which life has departed without a lawful ritual slaughter, and what is considered equivalent to it by the Shari'ah. And every slaughtered animal whose eating is permissible by the Shari'ah; such as camels, sheep, goats, cattle, and the like, if it is slaughtered with a lawful ritual slaughter, it is permissible to benefit from its fats and all its parts in what is permissible by the Shari'ah. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
