Fatwa number ( 18086 )
Q: My mother (may Allah have mercy on her) refused to let me drive a car, fearing accidents for me, and she asked me by Allah the Exalted to leave it and not drive. The question is: My mother passed away more than two years ago, and I have a desire to learn to drive a car because I am in great need of it to attend to my errands and work. Is it permissible for me to drive a car, and is it not considered undutifulness to parents? Please give us a ruling, may Allah reward you with good.
A: Obedience to the mother is obligatory, and refraining from driving the car is a fulfillment of her wish and kindness toward her, which is part of dutifulness. However, since your mother has passed away and your interest requires driving the car, we hope there is no blame on you in learning to drive; because your mother's distress was only during her lifetime. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
