Doubt Regarding the Establishment of Breastfeeding

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa No. ( 3962 )
Q: I have a maternal cousin, and I wish to marry her, but the problem is that there is doubt regarding breastfeeding between me and her from my maternal grandmother, who is also her mother’s mother. However,
this grandmother is not certain about this breastfeeding. We asked her, and she said: “I do not know; I have forgotten.” If this girl did nurse from me at that time, she says: “There was no milk.” This is what the grandmother said. I ask you, your Excellencies, to find the appropriate solution for me: Is it permissible to marry her or not, based on what the grandmother has said?

A: If the situation is as described, you may marry your aforementioned maternal cousin; because doubtful breastfeeding has no effect. Prohibition through breastfeeding only applies if it is known to be five breastfeedings or more within the first two years. If it is not known, the original ruling is permissibility. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
