Breastfeeding from the Grandmother

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Breastfeeding from the Full Sister

Question: A woman breastfed her full brother. What is the ruling in Islamic law regarding the marriage of their children?

Answer: If a woman breastfeeds her full brother, he becomes her son, and his children become her children. She becomes their grandmother through breastfeeding, and their children become uncles. They become brothers to the breastfed child and uncles to his children. It is not permissible for them to marry each other in this case, because the children of the woman who breastfed become uncles to the children of the breastfed child, and the children of the breastfed child become grandchildren to the woman who breastfed through breastfeeding, meaning she becomes their grandmother through breastfeeding.
[Breastfeeding from the Grandmother]

Question: I am a young man, about twenty years old, well-off, praise be to Allah, and I wish to marry my maternal uncle’s daughter or my maternal aunt’s daughter. However, I was surprised when my grandmother, who is my mother’s mother, told me that she breastfed me many times when my mother was ill. Is it permissible for me to marry my maternal uncle’s daughter or my maternal aunt’s daughter? And is it forbidden for my brothers what is forbidden for me, even though they were not breastfed by their grandmother? Please note that I was not breastfed by the same maternal uncle or maternal aunt whose daughters I wish to marry, but I was breastfed by their full sister, who has about three brothers between her and them, and they are from the same mother, that is, my mother’s mother, and the same father, my mother’s father.

Answer: As long as you were breastfed by your grandmother with the breastfeeding that makes marriage forbidden, which is five feedings within the first two years, it is not permissible for you to marry your maternal uncle’s daughter or your maternal aunt’s daughter, because you become their uncle through breastfeeding. Also, all the daughters of your maternal uncle and all the daughters of your maternal aunt are forbidden to you, because the ruling extends to all of them, because your grandmother became the mother of all of them: the mother of your maternal uncle and maternal aunt by blood, and the mother of you through breastfeeding. Therefore, all of her descendants are forbidden to you.
As for those who were not breastfed, there is no objection to their marrying their maternal uncles’ daughters or their maternal aunts’ daughters, and the ruling of your breastfeeding does not apply to them.
