Q: I have sent to your eminence regarding a phenomenon that has baffled me with a bafflement whose extent is known only to He who knows the secret and what is even more hidden. This phenomenon is called (al-mishaharah) among women , and it is one of many. If I were to enumerate for your eminence our customs and traditions in society, you would find that we know of Islam only its name, and knowledge of some branches of the religion. How does the phenomenon of al-mishaharah occur? 1 - If a man comes from a journey, or comes from the market or elsewhere, and suddenly enters upon a woman who recently gave birth, her milk is cut off, and the child finds no milk to suckle unless this woman first sees the back of this man. 2 - If the same man enters upon a child who was recently circumcised, his wound will not heal unless there is a ring of silver or gold hanging on a string around his neck. And if it is a girl, she will not become pregnant in the future unless she sees another girl who is circumcised.
3 - If a woman wants to wean her infant, it is required that she wean him at the end of the lunar month, and not before that, otherwise he becomes thin and weak. It is also necessary that this matter be kept secret. 4 - If a mother miscarries, and then stops becoming pregnant, it is said of her: that she is (al-mishaharah), and in order for her to become pregnant again, she must enter upon a woman who recently miscarried, and then the latter stops becoming pregnant... and so on. 5 - Among the manifestations of al-mishaharah in marriage : - If the bride stops becoming pregnant, she must see the pen with which the judge wrote her marriage certificate for her. - It is recommended that the writing of the contract (writing the marriage contract) be done at the end of the month. - Making a string with seven knots, called (‘Uqqa’), which is hung until the crescent of the new month, out of fear of al-mishaharah . First: We apologize for this digression, even though there is much more of this among us. And the question is: Do we find in our noble Shari'ah anything of this? And if the answer is in the negative, what is the explanation for the prevalence of this phenomenon, clearly and obviously, in several different directions, to the point that I was unable to convince
people that this is among the illusions that weaken our creed and our faith in Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) - please inform us - may Allah have mercy on you?
A: All these matters mentioned in the question, known to you by the name (al-mishaharah), are false delusions of the common people. It is not permissible to pay attention to them; because they are false beliefs and forbidden actions. It is obligatory for the Muslim to seek help from Allah and rely upon Allah in all his affairs, and in the fulfillment of all his requests,[At-Talaq 65:3] . It is also obligatory to deny these things and work to remove them and prevent them, and to clarify their contradiction with the creed and to clarify the correct creed to people. And in the hadith: Sahih al-Bukhari 3009 . And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad and his family and his Companions.
