The Meaning of the Great Sin
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The fifth question of the fatwa numbered ( 21307 )
Q5: Whatis the meaning of: (the great breach) in the Noble Qur'an? Is it one of the oaths of divorce, and does its effect fall upon the woman like an oath of divorce, as if
a man says: "I have sinned if I do such and such, or if I do not do it?"
A5: The Great Sin mentioned in the Noble Qur'an in Surat al-Waqi'ah is disbelief in Allah and making idols and partners into lords besides Allah. Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: The Great Sin is shirk (associating partners with Allah). Likewise, Mujahid and Ikrimah and al-Dahhak and Qatadah and al-Suddi and others (may Allah have mercy on them all) said so. It is not from the oaths of divorce. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
