Q: What is the ruling on revealing my face and living with the man who raised me and adopted me and attributed my name to his name? Knowing that I am currently married and in al-Madinah al-Munawwarah and I am not comfortable with my husband. If a divorce occurs, can I live in Sudan and is there a sin on me if I reveal my face
and live with him; because I have no one in this world other than him.
A: It is not permissible for you to remain with this man who adopted you, nor is it permissible for you to reveal your face to him; because he is a non-mahram to you, and adoption does not establish lineage, and Allah the Exalted has invalidated it by His saying:[Al-Ahzab 33:4-5] The meaning is that Allah the Exalted did not make the adopted sons whom you claim or who are claimed to you your sons, for your true sons are those whom you bore and who were of you, and what you say about the adopted son, that he is the son of so-and-so who claimed and adopted him, or that his father is so-and-so, is: your saying with your mouths, meaning: a statement with no reality, and Allah speaks the truth, meaning: certainty and veracity, so He commanded you to follow Him in His saying and His Shari'ah.
Then Allah the Exalted commanded that these adopted ones be called by the names of their fathers who bore them, and this is more just with Allah, meaning: more fair, more upright, and more guiding. If their true fathers are not known, they are to be called by the brotherhood of faith and loyalty based on that, so one is limited to what is known of them from this brotherhood and loyalty, and your ignorance of their fathers does not justify your adopting them and calling them to those who adopted them. Accordingly, it is not permissible for you to attribute yourself to this man, and remain with your husband in his home, and ask Allah the Exalted to improve your situation with him, but there is no harm in greeting him with words without shaking hands, and making du'a' for him and thanking him for his kindness. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad and his family and his Companions.

(4) Allah has not made for a man two hearts in his interior. And He has not made your wives whom you declare unlawful your mothers. And he has not made your adopted sons your [true] sons. That is [merely] your saying by your mouths, but Allah says the truth, and He guides to the [right] way. (5) Call them by [the names of] their fathers; it is more just in the sight of Allah. But if you do not know their fathers - then they are [still] your brothers in religion and those entrusted to you. And there is no blame upon you for that in which you have erred but [only for] what your hearts intended. And ever is Allah Forgiving and Merciful.
