Q: A quarrel occurred between his wife and his son’s wife, so he became angry and said to his wife on the night of 9/1/1396 AH: “You are forbidden to me for a full year.” His children cried out and wept. What is required of him?

A: If the situation is as described, what this husband did is considered zihar. Even though his prohibition was limited to one year, it is an abominable statement and a lie. He must seek forgiveness from Allah and repent to Him for committing this abomination. Allah the Exalted said:
Those who pronounce thihar among you [to separate] from their wives - they are not [consequently] their mothers. Their mothers are none but those who gave birth to them. And indeed, they are saying an objectionable statement and a falsehood. But indeed, Allah is Pardoning and Forgiving.
[Al-Mujadila 58:2]
Then, if he does not have intercourse with her until the year ends, he owes no expiation. But if he has intercourse with her during the year, he owes the expiation for zihar, which is: freeing a believing slave if he can find one. If he cannot find one, he must fast for two consecutive months. If he is unable to do so, he must feed sixty poor people, thirty sa’ in total, with each poor person receiving half a sa’ of the local staple food, such as dates, rice, or the like. Allah the Exalted said:
(2) Those who pronounce thihar among you [to separate] from their wives - they are not [consequently] their mothers. Their mothers are none but those who gave birth to them. And indeed, they are saying an objectionable statement and a falsehood. But indeed, Allah is Pardoning and Forgiving. (3) And those who pronounce thihar from their wives and then [wish to] go back on what they said - then [there must be] the freeing of a slave before they touch one another. That is what you are admonished thereby; and Allah is Acquainted with what you do. (4) And he who does not find [a slave] - then a fast for two months consecutively before they touch one another; and he who is unable - then the feeding of sixty poor persons. That is for you to believe [completely] in Allah and His Messenger; and those are the limits [set by] Allah. And for the disbelievers is a painful punishment.
[Al-Mujadila 58:2-4]
the verse.
And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
