The questioner : What is the ruling on extravagance in ghusl, wudu', or clothing?
The Shaykh : Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and I send prayers and peace upon our Prophet Muhammad, and upon his family and all his Companions. Extravagance is exceeding the limit in everything. Allah the Exalted said:[Al-A'raf 7:31] So He commanded eating and drinking and forbade extravagance, then He concluded the prohibition with His saying: [Al-An'am 6:141] The denial by Allah the Exalted of love for the extravagant indicates His dislike of it, meaning of extravagance. Accordingly, extravagance is forbidden in food, drink, clothing, dwellings, and other things. Likewise, regarding ghusl, and regarding wudu', a person must not exceed what the Shari'ah has set as the limit for it. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) performed wudu' once, twice, and three times, and he performed wudu' with varying amounts, washing some limbs three times, some twice, and some once. Therefore, it is not permissible for the believing person to exceed what the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) prescribed in wudu' or in ghusl.
