The Difference Between Limiting Progeny and Regulating Progeny

The second question of Fatwa No. ( 5040 )
Q2: I have read a lot in Islamic books about regulating progeny, which are published by us in the Arab Republic of Egypt, and they state that the Companions used to practice coitus interruptus with their wives. Was this really the case? Even though the wife has the right to enjoyment in the marriage? Was there any regulation of progeny in the time of the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them)? And what is the difference between regulating progeny and limiting progeny in Islam? By My soul which is in My hand, I often find myself at a loss in answering these two questions before my students, and I do not find anyone who gives me a satisfactory answer. Please inform us, may Allah reward you.
A2: The difference between limiting progeny and regulating it: Limiting progeny is the intention to stop at a specific number, such as two or three children, for example to maintain the family's financial level, and a dislike of increasing the progeny beyond that. As for regulating progeny, it is: working to delay pregnancy for a period in which the woman recovers and regains her vitality, then she leaves off the barriers to pregnancy desiring progeny, even if the number is large. The honorable Shaykh al-Mawdudi (may Allah have mercy on him) wrote a comprehensive work on the subject in his book (The Movement for Limiting Progeny), and you can refer to it if you wish. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
Bearing children is desired for the sake of offspring, even if their number is large. The honorable Shaykh al-Mawdudi (may Allah have mercy on him) wrote an extensive work on the subject in his book (The Movement for Population Control), and you can refer to it if you wish. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad and his family and his Companions.
