The Difference Between Hijab, Niqab, and the Garb of Adornment
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The third question of Fatwa No. ( 3618 )
Q3: What is the ruling in Islam regarding the hijab of a woman, what is the difference between the hijab and the niqab, and what is the garment of fame in the hijab?
A3: A woman covering her 'awrah, including her face, from non-mahram men
and it is forbidden to expose it. Covering it is called hijab, and its opposite is called safur. The niqab is what a woman uses to cover her face, with an opening in front of her eyes so she can see the road while walking. The garb of adornment is what draws attention and provokes surprise and laughter; it does not include what covers the awrah, for that does not provoke surprise or laughter except in those weak in religion and foolish in their dreams. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
