Caring for the family of an absent person without being alone with his wife
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa number ( 18110 )
Q: I have a distant relative who is in prison for 15 years, and I take care of his family’s needs by teaching the children, buying household necessities, and preaching to my relative’s family. I sit with them without a mahram, but I show them all respect and appreciation, and we are brothers in Allah. She wears a khimar and reveals her face and hands. What prompted me to do this was her mahrams, who do not care about her or her situation. I want to know my status in relation to the Shari'ah: is what I am doing forbidden or lawful? Knowing that everything I do is for the sake of Allah and out of my awareness of my duty toward my absent relative; for they have no income to spend from, and no one cares about them.
A: What you have done for the family of your absent relative is a good deed, and you are to be thanked for it; for taking care of the weak by fulfilling their needs is among the righteous deeds. However, it is not permissible for you to be alone with the woman; because she is a non-mahram to you, and
it is not permissible for her to reveal her face in your presence; because you are not one of her mahrams. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
