Fatwa No. ( 855 )
Q: What is your opinion—may Allah guide you—regarding one who deposits his money in banks that deal in riba (usury or interest), and utilize the people's deposits they hold in riba transactions, given that this depositor is able to protect his money from thieves using secure, specialized money safes?
A: If the bank utilizes the money deposited with it by the depositor in riba (usury or interest) transactions, and the owner of the money is able to protect his money from thieves and the like by other means that do not involve riba, then it is forbidden for him to deposit it in the bank or with anyone else who uses it in forbidden transactions and relies on it to commit sins. Indeed, the means to evil is evil, assisting in the commission of what is forbidden is forbidden, and means have the ruling of their ends.
