Taking Medication During the Day in Ramadan

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa No. ( 4958 )
Q: I inform your eminence that I have been suffering from asthma and severe allergies for 13 years. This year, I traveled to London for general examinations, as this disease has caused me complications, may Allah protect you. The doctor prescribed a treatment regimen for three months, to be taken regularly three times a day, and this specified period coincides with the blessed month of Ramadan. I ask your eminence to kindly inform me about how I should take the treatment, as my condition requires it because my lung disease causes me severe exhaustion from fasting every Ramadan. I also ask your eminence to clarify what the pure Shari'ah permits, may Allah preserve your eminence and guide you to righteous deeds.
A: If your situation is as you described, there is no blame on you for using the medication according to your need, even during the day; this is to alleviate the severity of the illness from you and in hope of healing from Allah. Then, if the treatment is by inhaling
the medication through the nose, or by intramuscular or intravenous injections; to alleviate the chest crisis and facilitate breathing, your fast is valid and you owe no make-up. However, if the treatment involves taking pills or drinking liquids, you must make up the fasting for those days on which you took them during the day, after your recovery and your ability to fast. If Allah wills that the illness continues and the treatment is by drinking or taking pills, and you are unable to make up the fast, then feed a poor person for each day you broke your fast, giving him half a sa' (a dry measure of about 3 kg) of wheat, dates, rice, or similar items you usually eat, for each day. And Allah is the Healer. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
