The first question of Fatwa No. ( 16480 )
Q1: What is the evidence that indicates that if a person eats on a day of Ramadan, the expiation is fasting for 60 consecutive days?
A1: The correct view is that if a person deliberately breaks his fast on a day of Ramadan without a valid legal excuse, he must repent to Allah and make up that day. As for fasting for sixty days, this is among the characteristics of the expiation for intercourse during the day in Ramadan specifically; due to the arrival of
the authentic hadith regarding this, and as for breaking the fast by means other than intercourse, there is no evidence, to our knowledge, that the expiation is obligatory upon him. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
