Borrowing Gold
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The sixth question of Fatwa No. ( 2730 )
Q6: Some well-known merchants who are our neighbors come to us and ask for a kilo of gold as a loan, or for pounds, and we give it to them willingly. They return it to us on the day they receive it. The price of gold may increase by more than two thousand riyals, or decrease, between the day of borrowing and the day of repayment. We ask you, may Allah reward you, to clarify this issue, which is of concern to us.
A6: It is permissible for you to lend gold by the kilo or by currency, and the borrower returns to you the pounds by count and other gold pieces by weight, exactly as he received them from you. There is nothing wrong with this, if Allah wills, for cooperation is required among Muslims. You are entitled only to the gold you lent, whether its price rises or falls. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
