Fatwa number ( 12673 )
Q: If I prayed Zuhr with the imam in the mosque, and then the adhan was called for the 'Asr prayer, and I forgot that I had already prayed Zuhr and thought that the adhan was for Zuhr, so I joined them in prayer with the intention of Zuhr, and during the prayer I remembered that the prayer was 'Asr and that I had already prayed Zuhr, what should I do? Should I renew my intention for 'Asr during the prayer, or should I leave the prayer to renew my intention?
A: If the matter is as you described, it is obligatory for you to break off the Zuhr prayer and restart the prayer with the intention of 'Asr, since you remembered this during the prayer. And if the imam concludes the prayer, you must make up the portion of the 'Asr prayer that you missed. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
