Q: 1 - What is the ruling of Islam on commercial insurance, and insurance for personal purposes and for lives, with evidence and the wisdom behind this ruling? 2 - What is the ruling of Allah the Exalted and the ruling of His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) in the following case: A young man works as an accountant for one of the national companies. During his work, the owner of the company presented insurance documents for his car to be recorded in the company's books. This young man says
that insurance is forbidden, whatever its type, so he refused to work on the grounds that it is a matter of usury, and that the one who writes usury is cursed. Then he explained to his father his opinion on this issue, and that he wished to resign from his job because of it. However, his father refused, and even forced him to work for the company and to record all accounting transactions, even if they were purely bank commissions. This young man tried to boycott his father; because he says: "There is no obedience to a created being in disobedience to the Creator." However, he fears for his mother being affected by his boycotting the home, so he was forced to submit to the situation. However, he refused to eat for several days, hoping that it would affect his father, but to no avail, and he fell into confusion about his affair. So what is the ruling of Allah, Glorified and Exalted, in this matter?
A: First: Commercial insurance in all its forms is forbidden; because it contains excessive uncertainty, usury, ignorance, gambling, and consuming the wealth of people unjustly, among other legal prohibitions. Second: It is not permissible for a Muslim to work in an insurance company in a clerical capacity or otherwise; because working in it is cooperation in sin and aggression, and Allah has forbidden it in His saying:[Al-Ma'idah 5:2]
And you are correct in your work, and your father is wrong against you. You must obey Allah and look for work in which there is no doubt. Whoever leaves something for the sake of Allah, Allah will replace it with something better for him, while treating the father with the best treatment and advising him with what you can of guidance to good.
