Zakat on Sheep
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa No. ( 31 )
Q1: If a sheep owner has 200 sheep, and then his flock increases by more than that, from one sheep to 99 sheep, what is the zakah due? And if he has 300 sheep and then his flock increases by more than that, from one sheep to 99 sheep, what is the zakah due? What is the gap (waqf) in sheep? And at what point does the obligation become fixed in sheep?
A1: In 200 sheep, the zakah is two sheep. If the number increases by one, the zakah is three sheep. If it increases further up to 399 sheep, the zakah is three sheep and no more. When it reaches 400 sheep, the zakah is four sheep. Thus, the obligation becomes fixed, and it is obligatory to pay one sheep for every hundred sheep. The gap (waqf) is the interval between two fixed obligations. For example, there is a gap between 40 and 121 sheep, a gap between 121 and 201 sheep, and a gap between 201 and 400 sheep. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
