The questioner : May Allah reward the honorableThe Shaykh : The phenomenon of the echo device has spread in many mosques, so what is the ruling on praying in the presence of this resonant device? Is it permissible to pray in a mosque that has this device? I have heard that Your Eminence refrained from praying in one of the mosques that has this device.
Note: Some people say: Where is the evidence for the prohibition? I ask for clarification.

The Shaykh : Where what?

The questioner : The evidence for the prohibition? I ask for clarification, and may Allah preserve you and care for you.

The Shaykh : Yes, I say: This echo, according to what we have heard about it, resembles the horn used by the Jews in their prayers. It also has another danger, which is that it repeats the letter, so that one letter becomes two or more. This is an addition to the Qur'an that is not permissible. Therefore, the scholars (may Allah have mercy on them) counted the shaddas in Surat al-Fatihah, counting every shaddah as a letter. They said: If one were to leave out the shaddah in a verse and say:
[All] praise is [due] to Allah, Lord of the worlds - الحمد لله ربِ العالمين
[Al-Fatihah 1:2]
, Rabb al-'alamin, his recitation would not be valid, because the shaddah, which is the repetition of the letter, is considered two letters. Accordingly, the echo means that the one who recites with it has added to the Qur'an what is not part of it. From this, we know the prohibition. First: If it is true that it resembles the horn of the Jews in their prayer, it is forbidden due to imitation. Second: If this is not true, it is still forbidden due to the addition of letters. We do not want to turn the Qur'an into songs. The Qur'an was revealed for humility and submission. Then, some people say to me: My mosque is small and cannot handle the microphone without echo, yet he uses the echo! And Allah, this is very regrettable, that a person worships his Lord with his desires rather than with guidance. We do not deny that a person may pray with a microphone if it does not change the letters or words, and does not take the Qur'an out of being a reminder that softens hearts. I mean, this echo takes it out so that it becomes like songs, and this is a trial. It is obligatory for the imam to fear Allah regarding himself, and to remove this device. Then he should look at whether he is in need of using the microphone or not. If there is no need, then there is no need. In reality, if the mosque is small, there is no need for a microphone, because transmitting it from the minaret is a matter that is prohibited, without doubt, because it harms the people around from the mosques, and it disturbs the others, and it harms the people of the houses as well, because the people of the houses want to pray and it disturbs them. Perhaps there is a sick person in the house who has not slept all night, and when the Fajr adhan was called, he prayed Fajr and then slept, and then this comes with the loud sound on the minaret and deprives him of sleep. And there are many harms in it. So we are not in need of transmitting the prayer from the minaret.
What remains is: Are we in need of using the loudspeaker in our mosque? One should look. If it is small, there is no need. If it is large, there is a need. But there is absolutely no need for the echo. In fact, the echo is something that is prohibited, and I have explained to you the reason for that. Yes.
