Supplication in the Friday Sermon

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa No. ( 2819 )
Q: The imam of our mosque always concludes the final part of the sermon by saying: “I seek forgiveness from Allah for myself, for you, and for all Muslims.” Sometimes he says: “I ask Allah for myself, for you, and for all Muslims the highest level of Paradise.” This is excellent supplication, because the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
We revolve around itحولها ندندن
However, some of the congregation say: “This is a great day, and we are in a place where supplication is answered. We want a long supplication that suits the occasion, such as the supplication for rain at its time, supplication for the Muslims for victory, supplication for the rulers to follow the truth, and supplication against the enemies to scatter their gathering and tear apart their ranks, along with other appropriate supplications. But the imam says: ‘The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) did not commit to a specific supplication in this regard, nor did the Caliphs, the Companions, or those after them. I follow their path.’ This has caused some of the congregation to boycott this
mosque and go to a mosque far from their homes, on the pretext that its imam concludes his sermon with many supplications, and they say “Ameen” to them. They have no reason for leaving the mosque near their homes except that the imam does not commit to supplication. What is the ruling of the religion, what do you advise, and who is in the right?

A: The imam’s supplication for the Muslims in the sermon is prescribed. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to do this. However, the imam should not commit to a specific supplication, but rather vary the supplication according to the circumstances. As for its length or brevity, that depends on the need for it. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would sometimes repeat the supplication three times, and sometimes twice. So the Sunnah for the preacher is to seek what the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to do in his sermons and supplications. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
