Preparing the deceased

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The first question of Fatwa number ( 2634 )
Q1: When a person dies, how do we prepare him, and do we accompany him to the cemetery in silence or with dhikr and recitation?
Volume 1: A - When a Muslim is on the verge of death, he should be turned toward the qiblah. Once his death is certain, his eyes should be closed and supplication should be made for him; nothing but good should be mentioned in his presence. This is based on what Muslim narrated from Umm Salimah (may Allah be pleased with her), who said:
She said that God’s messenger came in to Abu Salama when his eyes were fixedly open. Closing them he said, “When the soul is taken the sight follows it.” Some of his family wept and wailed, so he said, “Do not supplicate for yourselves anything but good, for the angels say Amen to what you say.” He then said, “O God, forgive Abu Salama, raise his degree among those who are rightly guided, and grant him a succession in his descendants who remain. Forgive both us and him, Lord of the universe, make his grave spacious for him and grant him light in it.” Muslim transmitted it.
Mishkat al-Masabih 1619
His beard should be tied so that his mouth does not remain open after he has cooled, his clothes should be removed from him, and he should be covered with a garment that covers his entire body. It is recommended to hasten
with preparing his body so that it does not change, then he should be undressed for washing, and his private parts should be covered from his navel to his knee during the washing. Only those who assist in washing him should be present. It is prescribed to hasten in paying off his debt to clear his conscience, and to carry out his bequest so that he may benefit from its reward. He should be shrouded in three white garments, the funeral prayer should be performed over him, he should be buried in the Muslim cemeteries, and supplication for forgiveness should be made for him after his burial. B - As for accompanying him to the cemetery, it should be done in silence, not with dhikr or recitation of the Qur'an; in accordance with the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), his Rightly Guided Caliphs, and the early generations, for whom the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) testified to goodness. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
