The second question of Fatwa No. ( 2252 )
Q2: Is the thigh an 'awrah?
Vol. 2: The majority of jurists held that a man's thigh is part of his 'awrah (nakedness). They cited as evidence for this a number of hadiths, none of which is free from some criticism regarding its chain of narration, whether due to a break in the chain or weakness in some of the narrators. However, they support one another, and taken together they suffice to serve as evidence for the ruling in question.
Among these hadiths is the one narrated by Abu Dawud and Ibn Majah from the hadith of 'Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:Sunan Ibn Majah 1460Da’if (Darussalam). And there is the one narrated by Ahmad and al-Bukhari in his *Tarikh* from the hadith of Muhammad ibn Jahsh , who said: . And there is the one narrated by Malik in the *Muwatta'*, Ahmad Abu Dawud and al-Tirmidhi from the hadith of Jarhad al-Aslami , who said: Al-Tirmidhi graded it as hasan (good). A group of scholars held that a man's thigh is not part of his 'awrah, citing as evidence what was narrated by Anas (may Allah be pleased with him): It was narrated by Ahmad and al-Bukhari, and he said: The hadith of Anas is the most sound in its chain, but the hadith of Jarhad is more cautious, and the opinion of the majority is more cautious, due to what al-Bukhari mentioned, and because the first-mentioned hadiths are explicit on the subject, whereas the hadith of Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) is open to interpretation.
And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his companions.
