Prayer in Leather Sandals

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa No. ( 758 )
Q: There has been disagreement regarding the ruling on entering mosques wearing shoes and praying in them, so what is the ruling of the Shari'ah in this matter?
A: It is part of the guidance of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) to enter the mosque wearing sandals and to pray in them. Abu Dawud narrated in his Sunan, through his chain of narration, from Abu Sa'id al-Khudri who said:
Abu Sa'id al-Khudri said: While God’s Messenger was leading his companions in prayer he took off his sandals and laid them at his left side; so when the people saw that, they removed their sandals. When he had finished his prayer he asked, "What made you remove your sandals? They replied, “We saw you remove yours, so we removed ours.” God’s Messenger then said, “Gabriel came to me and informed me that there was filth on them. When any of you comes to the mosque he should examine, and if he sees filth on his sandals he should wipe it off and pray in them.” Abu Dawud and Darimi transmitted it.
Mishkat al-Masabih 766
, and in
another narration he said:
There is impurity in them.فيهما خبث
, saying in both places: "impurity." And Abu Dawud also narrated from Ya'la ibn Shaddad ibn Aws from his father who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Act differently from the Jews, for they do not pray in their sandals or their shoes.خالفوا اليهود، فإنهم لا يصلون في نعالهم ولا خفافهم
Sunan Abi Dawud 652Sahih (Al-Albani)
And Abu Dawud also narrated from 'Amr ibn Shu'ayb from his father from his grandfather who said:
he had seen God’s Messenger praying both barefoot and wearing sandalsرأيت رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم يصلي حافيًا ومنتعلاً
Mishkat al-Masabih 769
. And it was also narrated by Ibn Majah. However, after mosques have been carpeted with fine carpets—which is usually the case—it is recommended for the one who enters the mosque to take off his sandals; out of regard for the cleanliness of the carpets and to prevent harming the worshippers with what may be on the soles of the shoes, even if it is ritually pure. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
