The Takbir of Ihram and Standing While Able

Fatwa No. ( 5549 )
Q: A man came to our area in al-Rabwah around 1393 AH. He had been studying in the Tabuk region. He saw my mother praying and standing in a rak'ah. When she finished the prayer, he said to her: "Mother, a woman's prayer is different from a man's." She asked: "How so, my son?" He said: "When a woman says the takbir of ihram, bows, and prostrates, she completes her prayer from a sitting position until she says the taslim. It is not permissible for a woman to stand in every rak'ah, even if she is able to stand." Consequently, my mother followed the method this man described to her in her prayer from that year until now. I was young and did not see her pray until very recently. Please note that she is able to stand. Now, I have turned to Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) and then to you. Please guide us to what is good and to the correct path. If her prayer was incorrect, does she have to make up the past years?
A: If the situation is as described, she must repent and seek forgiveness, but she does not have to make up the missed prayers. She is excused due to ignorance and the invalid fatwa she relied upon. It is obligatory for her in the future to ask scholars about what is difficult for her and not to act on the fatwas of laypeople.
And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his companions.
