Collecting donations in mosques

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The fourth question of Fatwa No. ( 6364 )
Q4: Is it permissible to collect funds for charitable projects and sell Islamic books in the mosques in France ?
A4: It is permissible to collect financial donations in the mosque for charitable associations; because of the cooperation in righteousness and good that is involved in it. And Allah the Exalted said:
cooperate in righteousness and pietyوَتَعَاوَنُوا عَلَى الْبِرِّ وَالتَّقْوَى
[Al-Ma'idah 5:2]
As for selling Islamic books in the mosques, it is not permissible, whether this is in France or elsewhere; because of the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
Narrated Abu Hurairah: That the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: "When you see someone selling or buying in the Masjid then say: 'May Allah not profit your business.' And when you see someone announcing about something lost then say: 'May Allah not return it to you.'" The Hadith of Abu Hurairah is Hasan Gharib. This is acted upon according to some of the people of knowledge. They dislike selling and buying in the Masjid. This is the view of Ahmad and Ishaq. Some of the people of knowledge permitted selling and buying in the Masjid.إذا رأيتم من يبيع في المسجد فقولوا: لا أربح الله تجارتك
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 1321Sahih (Darussalam)
, and because of the fact that this turns them into markets, whereas they were not built for that. They were built only for the worship of Allah, the remembrance of Allah, teaching knowledge, and the like. It should be that they are protected from what involves noise, raising of voices, and the stirring up of argument and dispute in worldly affairs.
It is permissible to sell them outside, at its doors. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
