Machine translationRead the Arabic original

Fatwa number ( 5560 )

Q: I am a student at the Teachers' College in Hail, and the religion teacher explained that it is not possible to combine the methods of the four Imams in Islam, for example, in the method of prayer, ablution, and fasting, etc., and all that is obligatory upon us. That is, the teacher says: It is not possible to combine the methods of the four Imams in Islamic legislation. I ask you, Your Eminence, to clarify this for us: Did the teacher hit the mark or make a mistake? And I ask that you send a book on this issue if there is one.
A: Praise be to Allah alone, and blessings and peace be upon His Messenger, his family, and his Companions.. After that: A Muslim is not required to combine the four schools of jurisprudence in his practice. However, if he is capable of deriving rulings himself from their evidence, it is obligatory for him to follow what appears to him to be correct. If he is not capable of deriving rulings, he should follow one of the Imams of the Muslims who are to be followed, based on the saying of Allah the Exalted:
So fear Allah as much as you are ableفَاتَّقُوا اللَّهَ مَا اسْتَطَعْتُمْ
[At-Taghabun 64:16]
, and His saying:
So ask the people of the message if you do not know.فَاسْأَلُوا أَهْلَ الذِّكْرِ إِنْ كُنْتُمْ لاَ تَعْلَمُونَ
[An-Nahl 16:43]
.
And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad and his family and his Companions.
