Some people’s overreach against the Book of Allah

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The fifth question of Fatwa No. ( 4272 ):
Q5: Some people may overreach against the Book of Allah by interpreting the verses according to their own desires in order to mislead people from the truth. An example of this is in Surat al-Imran, where Allah the Exalted said:
Who remember Allah while standing or sitting or [lying] on their sidesالَّذِينَ يَذْكُرُونَ اللَّهَ قِيَامًا وَقُعُودًا وَعَلَى جُنُوبِهِمْ
[Ali 'Imran 3:191]
. They interpret this as referring to dancing during dhikr, dominance, and muttering incomprehensible words while swaying to the right and left, saying: “Allah is alive, Allah is alive,” and so on. They also permit population control, singing for women, and praising the Messenger, using musical instruments and frivolity in doing so. We ask you to enlighten us about the matters of our religion and its correct understanding, and to refute the innovators in religion with the sufficient books on this matter.
.

A5: The sound method for interpreting the Qur'an is to interpret it by the Qur'an, the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and the statements of the Companions and the Tabi'un who followed them with excellence, aided by the rules of language and the objectives of legislation. As for the interpretation you mentioned regarding the saying of Allah the Exalted:
remember Allah while standing or sitting or [lying] on their sidesيَذْكُرُونَ اللَّهَ قِيَامًا وَقُعُودًا وَعَلَى جُنُوبِهِمْ
[Ali 'Imran 3:191]
, where some people interpret it as dancing, dhikr, humming, and muttering incomprehensible words while swaying to the right and left, saying: “Allah is alive,” as mentioned in the question, this is an invalid interpretation with no basis whatsoever. We advise you to review [Tafsir Ibn Jarir and Ibn Kathir and al-Baghawi ] and similar works
in the interpretation of this verse mentioned in the question and similar ones, so that you may know the truth in this matter from the words of the trustworthy scholars of tafsir. And success is from Allah. May Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
