A word before the lesson on the importance of caring for the Qur'an in terms of memorization, reflection, and exegesis, along with mentioning some rules of exegesis.

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, and upon his family and his Companions, and upon those who follow them with excellence until the Day of Judgment. In the name of Allah, we begin this period of this year, one thousand four hundred and seventeen, in the break between the end of the academic year and its beginning. And praise be to Allah, by whose blessings good deeds are completed. Among His blessings, Exalted is He, is that the first lesson we begin in this break is the exegesis of the speech of Allah, Mighty and Majestic. There is no doubt that the Noble Qur'an was revealed so that people would worship through its recitation, so that they would reflect upon its verses, and so that those of understanding would remember. Allah, Blessed and Exalted is He, said:
[This is] a blessed Book which We have revealed to you, [O Muhammad], that they might reflect upon its verses and that those of understanding would be reminded.
[Sad 38:29]
And if a person were to read a text composed by a human being, he must understand its meanings. {Attention, Ya Ayyub, or get up from your place.} He must reflect upon its meanings and understand them. Likewise, the speech of Allah, Mighty and Majestic, is all the more deserving of a person reflecting upon its meanings and understanding them, because a recitation without meaning is not a recitation. The reader who does not understand the meaning is in the position of the illiterate who does not read. The evidence for this is His saying, Exalted is He:
And among them are unlettered ones who do not know the Scripture except in wishful thinking
[Al-Baqarah 2:78]
meaning, except recitation. Allah described them as illiterate because they do not know the Book except by recitation only. The scholars, may Allah have mercy on them, mentioned important rules in the exegesis of the speech of Allah, Mighty and Majestic. We mention the following among them: First: The first and most important thing by which the Qur'an is explained is that the Qur'an is explained by the Qur'an, because the One who explained it is the One who revealed it, and He is most knowledgeable about His intent. So we explain the Qur'an by the Qur'an as long as we find a way to do so. For this, there are many examples, such as His saying, Blessed and Exalted is He:
(17) And what can make you know what is the Day of Recompense? (18) Then, what can make you know what is the Day of Recompense?
[Al-Infitar 82:17-18]
Allah explained that day by His saying:
It is the Day when a soul will not possess for another soul [power to do] a thing; and the command, that Day, is [entirely] with Allah.
[Al-Infitar 82:19]
So if a questioner asked us: What is the Day of Judgment? We would say: The day when no soul will have power over another soul, and the command on that Day is for Allah. And He said, Exalted is He:
(2) What is the Striking Calamity? (3) And what can make you know what is the Striking Calamity? (4) It is the Day when people will be like moths, dispersed, (5) And the mountains will be like wool, fluffed up.
[Al-Qari'ah 101:2-5]
And for this, there are many examples. Then we explain the Qur'an by the exegesis of the most knowledgeable people about it, which is the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). For this, there are examples, among them His saying, Exalted is He:
For them who have done good is the best [reward] and extra
[Yunus 10:26]
Allah, Mighty and Majestic, did not specify the increase, but the Messenger, may the prayers and peace of Allah be upon him, specified it by his saying:
It is the gazing at the Face of Allah
And another example is the saying of Allah, Exalted is He:
And prepare against them whatever you are able of power
[Al-Anfal 8:60]
The Prophet, may the prayers and peace of Allah be upon him, explained it by his saying:
Know that strength is archery
and he repeated it. And just as the exegesis of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) of the Qur'an is by his words, so it is by his actions. His saying, Exalted is He:
And establish prayer
Allah, Exalted is He, did not specify the manner of this establishment that He commanded, but the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) explained it by his action. So he stood, bowed, prostrated, and sat, and said:
offer your prayers in the way you saw me offering my prayers
Sahih al-Bukhari 6008
So, what is the first thing by which we explain the Qur'an? By the Qur'an. Why? Because the One who explained it is the One who spoke it, and He is most knowledgeable about His intent. Then by what? By the Sunnah of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), verbal and practical. Why? Because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) is the most knowledgeable of people about the speech of Allah, because he is His Messenger. Then after that, by the exegesis of the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them). The exegesis of the Companions is undoubtedly more deserving than that of others, because the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) are the most knowledgeable of people about the language of the Qur'an, without dispute, and because the Qur'an was revealed in their time and in the circumstances they knew. There is no doubt that the meaning is known in the time and circumstance in which it was revealed. For this reason, they transmit to us the occasions of revelation for the verses that were revealed for a cause, because they knew that. So, if it is not found in the Book of Allah or the Sunnah of His Messenger, we refer to whom? To the sayings of the Companions. The Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) differ in their understanding of the Qur'an in an apparent way, just as they differ in their ranks in virtues, so they differ in knowledge and in the exegesis of the Qur'an. Among the most knowledgeable of them in exegesis is Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both), because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) prayed for him and said:
O Allah, grant him deep understanding in the religion and teach him interpretation
Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah 29:588
meaning, exegesis. After this, the fourth rank is referring to the speech of the Tabi'un who took from the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them). Not all of the Tabi'un, but those who are known for taking from the Companions. At their head is Mujahid ibn Jabr (may Allah have mercy on him), who took the exegesis of the Qur'an from Abdullah ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both). He would recite the Qur'an to Ibn Abbas and stop at every verse to ask him about its exegesis. Then after that, the best of the sayings of the imams of this Ummah and its scholars is taken. Then know that the exegesis of the Qur'an is not limited to the exegesis of the Companions and the Tabi'un, and because meanings may emerge for the verses that did not occur to the mind.
in what has preceded, as some verses point to modern inventions that have occurred in our time, and as some verses point to what has been known in the science of biology and creatures. This is because the Qur'an is a universal book, and people continue to extract its treasures and benefits until the Day of Resurrection. Based on this, it is obligatory for us to care for the speech of Allah, Mighty and Majestic, and to reflect upon it and understand it so that we may catch up with the group.
