The Tree of Zaqqum

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The fifth question of Fatwa No. ( 1777 ):
Q5: I hope you will inform me about the Tree of Zaqqum?
A5: Allah mentioned the Tree of Zaqqum in Surat al-Dukhan, saying:
(43) Indeed, the tree of zaqqum (44) Is food for the sinful.إِنَّ شَجَرَتَ الزَّقُّومِ (43) طَعَامُ الأَثِيمِ
[Ad-Dukhan 44:43-44]
And in Surat al-Isra, He said:
as was the accursed tree [mentioned] in the Qur'anوَالشَّجَرَةَ الْمَلْعُونَةَ فِي الْقُرْآنِ
[Al-Isra 17:60]
And in Surat al-Saffat, He the Exalted said:
(62) Is Paradise a better accommodation or the tree of zaqqum? (63) Indeed, We have made it a torment for the wrongdoers. (64) Indeed, it is a tree issuing from the bottom of the Hellfire, (65) Its emerging fruit as if it was heads of the devils.
[As-Saffat 37:62-65]
. Al-Hafiz Ibn Kathir (may Allah have mercy on him) said in his tafsir regarding the verse in al-Isra: “As for the cursed tree,” it is the Tree of Zaqqum, as the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) informed them that he had seen Paradise and Hellfire, and had seen the Tree of Zaqqum. They denied this, until Abu Jahl (may the curses of Allah be upon him) said: “Bring us dates and foam,” and he began eating from them, saying: “Eat Zaqqum,” for we do not know Zaqqum to be anything other than this. Ibn Abbas , Masruq , Abu Malik , al-Hasan al-Basri , and others narrated this. End of quote.
As for knowing the specific tree itself, no practical ruling is based on it. Rather, it is obligatory to believe in and submit to what Allah has informed us about it in the Qur'an, and what is established from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) regarding it. And success is from Allah. May Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
