How to Deny Religious Innovations
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The eighth question of Fatwa No. ( 4250 ):
Q8: There are those who say: It is obligatory to avoid speaking about religious innovations and recommended practices; because if the teacher speaks about this, he will get into trouble with people; because most of them are innovators and do not know the recommended practices, and consequently he will clash with them, and thus fitnah (trial, discord or temptation) arises because people do not accept these lessons, as they contradict their desires. So, is the one who corrects the creed by purifying it from religious innovations called a fitnah (trial, discord or temptation) causer, or is it the one who opposes the command of Allah who causes fitnah (trial, discord or temptation)?
A8: The da'iyah (caller to Islam) should be knowledgeable about what he commands and what he forbids, wise in what he commands and what he forbids, and he should weigh the benefits, prioritizing the stronger position over the weaker one, and he should look at the harms and commit the least of them to repel the most severe one. If the benefits and harms conflict and the benefits are stronger,
he acts upon them, and if the harms are stronger, he leaves them. Based on this, he should establish the Sunnah (the Prophet's way) and explain it, and he should deny the religious innovation and explain it to people, but with wisdom, good admonition, and the best kind of argumentation. Allah the Exalted said:
Invite to the way of your Lord with wisdom and good instruction, and argue with them in a way that is best
