Fatwa number ( 5265 ):
Q: We ask you, O Shaykh, to clarify the chain of narration and the authenticity of the following hadith, and may you receive the full reward from Allah: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:Sahih al-Bukhari 3481 .
A: Imam al-Bukhari narrated in his Sahih, in the chapter on the fear of Allah: "It was narrated to us by Uthman ibn Abi Shaybah , who was narrated to us by Jarir from Mansur , from Rubayyi from Hudhayfah , from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), who said:Sahih al-Bukhari 6480 . It was narrated to us by Musa , who was narrated to us by Mu'tamir , who said: I heard my father, who was narrated to us by Qatadah from 'Uqbah ibn 'Abd al-Ghaffar , from Abu Sa'id (may Allah be pleased with him), from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): Sahih al-Bukhari 6481 . So I narrated it to Abu Uthman , and he said: I heard Salman , except that he added: , or as he narrated it. This man was driven by his fear of Allah and his ignorance of the comprehensiveness of Allah's power to
bequeath to his children what was mentioned, so may Allah have mercy on him and forgive him. Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah (may Allah have mercy on him) said, after mentioning the hadith and the scholars' argumentation regarding it: "(This man had fallen into doubt and ignorance regarding the power of Allah the Exalted to recreate a human being after he has been burned and scattered, and that He will resurrect the dead and gather them if that is done to him. These are two great principles: (The first) is related to Allah the Exalted: which is the belief that He is All-Powerful over everything. (The second) is related to the Last Day: which is the belief that Allah will resurrect this dead person and reward him for his deeds. And despite this, since he was a believer in Allah in general and a believer in the Last Day in general—that is, that Allah rewards and punishes after death—and he had done a righteous deed, which was his fear of Allah lest He punish him for his sins, Allah forgave him for what he had done of belief in Allah and the Last Day and righteous deed). And success is from Allah. And may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
Q: We ask you, O Shaykh, to clarify the chain of narration and the authenticity of the following hadith, and may you receive the full reward from Allah: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
A man used to do sinful deeds, and when death came to him, he said to his sons, 'After my death, burn me and then crush me, and scatter the powder in the air, for by Allah, if Allah has control over me, He will give me such a punishment as He has never given to anyone else.' When he died, his sons did accordingly. Allah ordered the earth saying, 'Collect what you hold of his particles.' It did so, and behold! There he was (the man) standing. Allah asked (him), 'What made you do what you did?' He replied, 'O my Lord! I was afraid of You.' So Allah forgave him.
A: Imam al-Bukhari narrated in his Sahih, in the chapter on the fear of Allah: "It was narrated to us by Uthman ibn Abi Shaybah , who was narrated to us by Jarir from Mansur , from Rubayyi from Hudhayfah , from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), who said:
There was a man amongst the people who had suspicion as to the righteousness of his deeds. Therefore he said to his family, 'If I die, take me and burn my corpse and throw my ashes into the sea on a hot (or windy) day.' They did so, but Allah, collected his particles and asked (him), What made you do what you did?' He replied, 'The only thing that made me do it, was that I was afraid of You.' So Allah forgave him.
The Prophet (ﷺ) mentioned a man from the previous generation or from the people preceding your age whom Allah had given both wealth and children. The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "When the time of his death approached, he asked his children, 'What type of father have I been to you?' They replied: You have been a good father. He said, 'But he (i.e. your father) has not stored any good deeds with Allah (for the Hereafter): if he should face Allah, Allah will punish him. So listen, (O my children), when I die, burn my body till I become mere coal and then grind it into powder, and when there is a stormy wind, throw me (my ashes) in it.' So he took a firm promise from his children (to follow his instructions). And by Allah they (his sons) did accordingly(fulfilled their promise.) Then Allah said, "Be"' and behold! That man was standing there! Allah then said. "O my slave! What made you do what you did?" That man said, "Fear of You." So Allah forgave him.
