Celebrating a boy's birthday

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa number ( 2008 ):
Q: We havesome of our Muslim brothers who have established birthday celebrations for themselves and their children. What is the view of Islam regarding these celebrations?
A: The principle in acts of worship is that they are based on divine legislation, so it is not permissible for anyone to worship Allah with what He has not legislated; due to His saying (peace and blessings be upon him) in the authentic hadith:
'A'isha reported Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) as saying: He who innovates things in our affairs for which there is no valid (reason) (commits sin) and these are to be rejected.من أحدث في أمرنا هذا ما ليس منه فهو رد
Sahih Muslim 1718a
, and His saying:
He who did any act for which there is no sanction from our behalf, that is to be rejected.من عمل عملاً ليس عليه أمرنا فهو رد
Sahih Muslim 1718b
, and birthday celebrations are a type of innovation in the religion of Allah, so it is not permissible for anyone to perform them, regardless of their status or role in life. The most noble of creation and the best of the messengers (peace and blessings be upon them) is Muhammad ibn 'Abd Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and it is not recorded that he established a celebration for his birth or guided his Ummah to it. The best of this Ummah after its Prophet are its Caliphs and its Companions, and it is not recorded that they established a celebration for his birth or for the birth of any of them (may Allah be pleased with them). The good lies in following their guidance and what
they derived from the school of their Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Added to this is the imitation in this religious innovation of the Jews and the Christians and other disbelievers in the celebrations they have innovated. May Allah help us. And success is from Allah. And may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
