Q: What is the ruling in Islam regarding greeting the Christians on their festivals? My uncle’s neighbor is a Christian who greets him on occasions of joy and festivals, and he also greets my uncle on a joyous occasion or festival and every other occasion. Is it permissible for a Muslim to greet a Christian, and for a Christian to greet a Muslim, on their festivals and occasions of joy? Please give us a ruling, may Allah reward you with good.

A: It is not permissible for a Muslim to greet the Christians on their festivals; because that involves cooperation in sin, and we have been forbidden from that. Allah the Exalted said:[Al-Ma'idah 5:2] . Also, it involves showing affection toward them, seeking their love, and expressing satisfaction with them and their religious practices, and this is not permissible. Rather, it is obligatory to display hostility toward them and make clear one’s hatred of them; because they oppose Allah (Mighty and Majestic) and associate others with Him, making for Him a partner and a child. Allah the Exalted said: [Al-Mujadila 58:22] the verse, and He said: [Al-Mumtahanah 60:4] . And success is from Allah. And may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, and his family and his Companions.

but do not cooperate in sin and aggression
وَلاَ تَعَاوَنُوا عَلَى الإِثْمِ وَالْعُدْوَانِYou will not find a people who believe in Allah and the Last Day having affection for those who oppose Allah and His Messenger, even if they were their fathers or their sons or their brothers or their kindred. Those - He has decreed within their hearts faith and supported them with spirit from Him
لاَ تَجِدُ قَوْمًا يُؤْمِنُونَ بِاللَّهِ وَالْيَوْمِ الآخِرِ يُوَادُّونَ مَنْ حَادَّ اللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُ وَلَوْ كَانُوا آبَاءَهُمْ أَوْ أَبْنَاءَهُمْ أَوْ إِخْوَانَهُمْ أَوْ عَشِيرَتَهُمْ أُولَئِكَ كَتَبَ فِي قُلُوبِهِمُ الإِيمَانَ وَأَيَّدَهُمْ بِرُوحٍ مِنْهُThere has already been for you an excellent pattern in Abraham and those with him, when they said to their people, "Indeed, we are disassociated from you and from whatever you worship other than Allah. We have denied you, and there has appeared between us and you animosity and hatred forever until you believe in Allah alone
