Fatwa No. ( 2089 ):
Q: The opinions of the jurists have differed regarding praying behind innovator imams and followers of the Sufi paths , especially those following the Tijaniyyah path. I have read the treatise of the Shaykh 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Yusuf al-Ifriqi (may Allah have mercy on him), the former director of the House of Hadith in al-Madinah al-Munawwarah [Al-Anwar al-Rahmaniyyah fi Hidayat al-Firqah al-Tijaniyyah], in which it became clear that the beliefs of the followers of this path—may Allah guide them to the straight path—are not correct, and they are closer to shirk (associating partners with Allah) and misguidance, refuge with Allah, than to faith and belief in the Book of Allah and following the Sunnah of His chosen and selected Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him). Is the prayer valid behind an innovator imam who follows the Tijaniyyah path? If the answer is no, is it permissible for a Muslim to establish prayer in his home if he does not find an imam who is not an innovator in any mosque in the city where he resides? And is
it permissible to establish prayer in a private congregation in the mosque after the innovator who follows the Tijaniyyah path has finished his prayer? This will lead to confusion in minds and division among the ranks of Muslims.
A: The Tijaniyyah sect is among the most severe sects in disbelief, misguidance, and religious innovation, for they have not been permitted by Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) to do so. Therefore, the prayer is not valid behind one who is on their path. A Muslim can seek an imam who does not follow the Tijaniyyah path or any other path of the innovators, whose worship and actions are not characterized by following Muhammad ibn 'Abd Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). If he does not find an imam who is not an innovator, he should establish a congregation in any of the mosques of the Muslims, provided he is safe from fitnah (trial, discord or temptation) and harm from the innovators. If there is an innovator who has power in his country, he should establish the congregation in his home or in any place where he feels safe for himself. Whenever it is possible for you to migrate to a country where the Sunnah is established and innovations are combated, it is obligatory for you to do so. And success is from Allah. May Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
