Fatwa number ( 3087 ):
Q: In our town, there is a mosque imam who follows one of the Sufi orders, specifically the Tijaniyyah order. The head of this order distributes the *wird* (set of dhikr), and they recite this *wird* inside the mosque in a loud voice within a special circle. In the center of the circle, there is a piece of white cloth. They recite this dhikr every day after the Fajr prayer and after the 'Asr prayer, and they call it "al-Hilalah." They have another dhikr specific to Friday, which they recite after the 'Asr prayer, called "al-Wazifah." They conclude this dhikr with a closing formula called "Hizb al-Hamd li-Allah..." and so on, consisting of various dhikr. When a follower of this order dies, after preparing the body, they place it in the center of the circle and recite the *wazifah* over it, as we mentioned. They carry this deceased person, and as they carry him to the cemetery, they say "La ilaha illa Allah" (There is no god but Allah) in very loud voices.
They lower this dead person into the grave with *al-Fatihah*. And this imam, as mentioned previously in the question, collects money and promises from the poor and the rich. He carries this money and wealth to the Shaykh of the *Zawiyah* (Sufi lodge). He also has another activity: *hazaz* (rhythmic chanting) of praises with the *madahin* (praisers), who praise their Shaykh, Ahmad al-Tijani. He also circumambulates the shrine of Sayyid al-Hajj 'Ali in Admasn and supplicates to him to fulfill his affairs. He also works in *fidwah al-ikhlas* (the ransom of sincerity), and they say that the *fidwah* saves its owner on the Day of Resurrection from sins. This is attached to the imams of the Tijani path, and only those who follow the Tijani path are ransomed by it. Its price is between 800 Algerian dinars and more. The question posed to your eminence is: Is his imamah permissible, and is it permissible to pray behind him or not?
A: The Tijani sect is among the most severe sects in disbelief, misguidance, and religious innovation, because Allah the Exalted and His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) did not legislate it. Therefore, it is not permissible to appoint as imam one who is on their path, and the prayer behind one who is on their path is not valid. And success is from Allah. May Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
