What is the ruling on purchasing alcohol and using it as a disinfectant for wounds and a sterilizer for medical equipment?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : Some of the brothers here are asking: What is your opinion on the legal ruling, or what is the legal ruling, regarding the use of alcohol as an external disinfectant for wounds and for sterilization, especially for some medical equipment? What naturally follows from this is the ruling on purchasing alcohol for this purpose?

The Shaykh : What I believe and am certain of is that it is not permissible in Islam for a Muslim to deal with alcohol, whether in its manufacture, sale, or purchase. It is not hidden that the necessary consequence of this is that it is not permissible to introduce it into any form of treatment, whether for sterilization, for preserving medicines, or the like. The reason for this, which I do not think is hidden from you, if Allah wills, is that Allah (Mighty and Majestic) has forbidden intoxicants in the Book of Allah, and His Messenger confirmed this in his many good hadiths. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) added clarification in these hadiths, and that clarification is like an interpretation of the Qur'an when he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Allah has cursed ten people regarding intoxicants
He mentioned the first of them, the one who drinks it, then he added to that the remaining types, which revolve around the fact that they assist this drinker. Let us say the first one cursed,
Allah has cursed ten people regarding intoxicants: the one who drinks it
he added to that and said:
the one who serves it, the one who fetches it, the one who presses it, the one who is pressed by it, the one who sells it, the one who buys it, the one who carries it, and the one to whom it is carried
, and so on for the remaining types of the ten. All these types, after the first type, only deserved the curse from Allah (Blessed and Exalted is He) because they assist the drinker. And were it not for these types, there would be no intoxicants, and were there no intoxicants, there would be no drinker of them at all.
I said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) took upon himself the task of clarifying a text in the Qur'an with the detail you heard in this authentic hadith. I mean by that text the saying of Allah (Blessed and Exalted is He):
And cooperate in righteousness and piety, but do not cooperate in sin and aggression.
[Al-Ma'idah 5:2]
. As an interpretation of this last part of this verse:
but do not cooperate in sin and aggression
[Al-Ma'idah 5:2]
, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) cursed in his hadith those nine types after the first type, which is the drinker. After this, we say: It is not hidden from the educated among you, and especially the doctors, that intoxicants are composed of things, among which is alcohol. Intoxicants contain water in a specific, known proportion, for example, perhaps a small amount of sugar, and they contain alcohol. This alcohol is the reason intoxicants make their drinker intoxicated. If it is known by the Shari'ah that intoxicants are the mother of all evils, and if we know by knowledge and analysis that the origin of intoxicants or the cause of intoxication in them is alcohol, then it is correct to say that alcohol is the mother of the mother of all evils. If intoxicants, which are not pure alcohol, are known by the Shari'ah to be the mother of all evils because of the sins, disobedience, and transgressions that branch out and result from consuming them, then there is no doubt that the alcohol in intoxicants is the mother of the mother of intoxicants. At that point, if it is not permissible by the Shari'ah to purchase intoxicants, sell them, and [deal in] the other types you heard about in the previous hadith, then naturally it is not permissible to manufacture, purchase, or sell alcohol, because it can be easily converted into intoxicants. And we know that many spirits or fragrant scents with a pleasant smell have alcohol added to them in varying proportions. Some of them, which are called today by the foreign name "cologne," sometimes contain a large proportion of alcohol to the degree that, as we hear and you hear with us, those who are deprived of intoxicants in some Islamic countries resort to this cologne, mix in some things, and consume it and drink it in place of intoxicating alcohol. Therefore, in my opinion, it is not permissible for there to be alcohol in a Muslim's home, for the reasons we mentioned, that it is the mother of the mother of intoxicants, because it is not permissible for there to be the mother of all evils in a Muslim's home.
