What is the number of recommended rak'ahs before and after the Friday prayer?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : What is the number of recommended rak'ahs before and after the Friday prayer?

The Shaykh : Before the prayer, there are no recommended rak'ahs. Before the Friday prayer, there are no recommended rak'ahs, but there is absolute voluntary prayer. Whoever enters the mosque on Friday before the preacher ascends the pulpit may pray as much as he wishes: two, four, six, or eight rak'ahs. This is absolute voluntary prayer. When the preacher ascends the pulpit and prepares for the sermon, he should prepare to finish his prayer. This is unlike the recommended practice after the Friday prayer, where there are two rak'ahs based on the action of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him), and four rak'ahs based on his encouragement, as stated in a hadith in Muslim:
Whoever among you is to pray after the Friday prayer, then let him pray four.
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 523Sahih (Darussalam)
.
Here is a question about a verse:
Allah is the Light of the heavens and the earth
[An-Nur 24:35]
.

The questioner : Should the four rak'ahs be prayed in the mosque or in the house?

The Shaykh : No, this distinction has no basis. The general principle for recommended voluntary prayers is that it is better to pray them in the house, based on his saying (peace and blessings be upon him):
The most excellent prayer of a person is (that which he prays) in his house except that which is prescribed (the five congregational prayers).
Bulugh al-Maram 2:313
. In fact, he used to pray the two rak'ahs after Friday in the house. However, the four-rak'ah recommended practice we mentioned is absolute:
Whoever among you is to pray after the Friday prayer, then let him pray four.
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 523Sahih (Darussalam)
. This absolute statement is restricted by the previous statement:
The most excellent prayer of a person is (that which he prays) in his house except that which is prescribed (the five congregational prayers).
Bulugh al-Maram 2:313
. Therefore, the distinction mentioned by some authors has absolutely no basis. If you pray the two rak'ahs of the post-Friday recommended practice in the house, you have performed two recommended practices: the recommended practice of the two rak'ahs and the recommended practice of praying them in the house. If you pray four rak'ahs after Friday, and you pray them in the mosque, you have performed one recommended practice, which is praying these four. But if you pray them in the house, you have combined the two recommended practices: praying them as four and praying them in the house. There is no doubt that praying four is better than praying two.
