Perseverance in the pursuit of knowledge and patience in it.

The Shaykh : And among the things that a student of knowledge should do, if he truly seeks knowledge, is to persevere in it, meaning to be consistent with it, to be patient, and not to get bored, because knowledge is difficult. If you give it all of yourself, you will grasp some of it. If you give it only part of yourself, you will grasp nothing from it. Strive in reviewing, strive in discussing with your brothers with the intention of reaching the truth. Strive in tending to what you have memorized of knowledge. When you read the history of the scholars (may Allah have mercy on them), you are amazed. How did they bear this patience in seeking knowledge? Even though there was no electricity, and writing tools were not easy, they were difficult. Things were difficult in that time. Nevertheless, they would stay all night reviewing by a lamp, barely able to see what they were reading. But they were serious, because they knew that in their seriousness and seeking of knowledge, they were like those striving in the path of Allah (Mighty and Majestic). It is not a wasted effort, but it is like jihad in the path of Allah. And listen to the saying of Allah (Blessed and Exalted is He): [At-Tawbah 9:122] What is the verse? Brother, you, yes, that is it. You don't know! Fine. [At-Tawbah 9:122] Meaning: in jihad, this is not possible. Why? Because if they all went out for jihad, the rituals of Islam would be disrupted. Therefore He said: And the meaning of is: why did they not. [At-Tawbah 9:122] Meaning a group sat down [At-Tawbah 9:122] from those who gain understanding in the religion? The ones who went out or the ones who stayed? The ones who stayed. [At-Tawbah 9:122]. So look at how Allah equated dedicating oneself to seeking knowledge with what? With jihad in the path of Allah. So you, O student of knowledge, are a mujahid in the path of Allah. And people's need for knowledge is greater than their need for jihad, because jihad is in a specific direction and a specific action. But knowledge is in all aspects of life. Through knowledge, a person knows his creed regarding his Lord (Mighty and Majestic), knows how to purify himself, how to perform wudu, how to pray, how to give zakah, how to fast, how to perform Hajj, how to strive. And who are the heirs of the prophets? The mujahideen or the scholars? The second. The scholars are the heirs of the prophets. If they inherit from the prophets in worship, character, dealing with people, and calling to Islam. If they fulfill this, they have inherited from the prophets. As for the scholar who does not act upon his knowledge, he is not an heir of the prophets. If you do not act, you are not among the heirs of the scholars. But know that you may seek knowledge and be lax in acting upon it. But the more you seek knowledge, the more you desire what is with Allah, and at that time, what do you do? You act upon the knowledge. Therefore, some of the people of knowledge said: We sought knowledge for other than Allah, but it refused to be for anything but Allah. Subhan Allah! So all of the sacred knowledge is good. So act upon it and you will gain its profit.
