The Shaykh : The scholars (may Allah have mercy on them) differed on which is better: knowledge or jihad in the path of Allah? We say: knowledge, in its own right, is better than jihad in the path of Allah, because the entire Muslim community needs knowledge, and because knowledge encompasses all the affairs of Muslims, including worship, dealings, morals, and others. Jihad in repelling the enemies so that the word of Allah is the supreme one—this is regarding the two things in their own essence. However, regarding a specific individual, a man may come to us and ask, "Which is better for me: knowledge or jihad?" We say, "Jihad." Another may come and ask, "Which is better for me: knowledge or jihad?" We say, "Knowledge," due to the difference in their circumstances. If a man comes to us who is strong in body, strong in resolve, brave, but weak in knowledge, with poor memorization, the worst understanding, and the least perseverance in knowledge, what do we tell him? "Fight and do not study?" No, fight. Conversely, if a man comes to us who is weak in body and not brave, but has good memorization, understanding, and very strong perseverance in knowledge, what do we tell him? "Knowledge is better." If the two are equal, meaning he finds no factor that tips the scale in favor of one over the other, then knowledge is the choice, for people need it. [Al-Ahzab 33:41] And among this is what we mentioned recently: seeking knowledge.
