The Divisions of Tawhid.

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : Because you know, in my belief, that the verified scholars have divided tawhid (the oneness of Allah), which saves one on the Day of Resurrection, into three categories. If a Muslim neglects one of them, he is not a true monotheist. The first category is tawhid al-rububiyyah (oneness of lordship), the second is tawhid al-uluhiyyah (oneness of worship) or tawhid al-'ibadah, and the third is tawhid al-asma' wa al-sifat (oneness of the names and attributes). Whoever directs any of the acts of worship with which Allah (Mighty and Majestic) has commanded His servants to worship Him to other than Him (Mighty and Majestic) has taken him as a god alongside Him.
Therefore, we find in the Noble Qur'an that when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was calling the polytheists of his people to worship Allah alone, having no partner, with the good word:
(11) And when it is said to them, "Do not cause corruption on the earth," they say, "We are but reformers." (12) Unquestionably, it is they who are the corrupters, but they perceive [it] not. وإذا قيل لهم لا إله إلا الله يستكبرون
[Al-Baqarah 2:11-12]
, and it was also reported about them that they said:
Have you made the gods one God? Indeed, that is a great thing. أجعل الآلهة إلهًا واحدًا إن ها لشيء عجاب
, the polytheists did not deny the first type of tawhid, which is tawhid al-rububiyyah (oneness of lordship) or tawhid al-khaliqiyah (oneness of creation); rather, they acknowledged it completely. They only denied tawhid al-'ibadah (oneness of worship). That is why they said:
Have you made the gods one God? Indeed, that is a great thing. أجعل الآلة إلهًا واحدًا إن هذا لشيء عجاب
. They objected to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) when he ordered them not to slaughter except for Allah, not to swear except by Allah, and not to make vows except for Allah. They found this objectionable and made it a sign of their disbelief and their shirk (associating partners with Allah) regarding uluhiyyah (divinity), while Allah (Mighty and Majestic) is unique in worship.
So, when any Muslim says: "There is no god but Allah, Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah," this undoubtedly saves him from the punishment of this world, which is killing, as he (peace be upon him) said:
I have been commanded to fight people until they testify that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah. When they say it, their blood and property are protected from me except by its right, and their account is with Allah. أمرت أن أقاتل الناس حتى يشهدوا ألا إله إلا الله وأن محمدًا رسول الله، فإذا قالوها فقد عصموا مني دماؤهم وأموالهم إلا بحقها وحسابهم على الله
. Whoever says "There is no god but Allah" saves himself from death. However, he will not be saved from the eternal abode in the Fire before Allah (Mighty and Majestic) unless he fulfills the right of this phrase, and the first of its rights is to worship Allah (Mighty and Majestic) alone, having no partner. So, if one circumambulates graves, this means he has exalted them with an act of worship that Allah (Mighty and Majestic) made an act of worship for Him alone. This misguided person has transferred it from worship of Allah to worship of the deceased, and this is shirk (associating partners with Allah) without any doubt or ambiguity. Is there anything else?
