The obligation to return to what the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was upon.

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : ... they would differ in it regarding matters of the world, so it was imperative at that time that we return to knowing what the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) was upon in matters of religion, so that we may follow his example, and so that we may also realize the saying of our Lord (Mighty and Majestic) concerning him:
There has certainly been for you in the Messenger of Allah an excellent pattern for anyone whose hope is in Allah and the Last Day
[Al-Ahzab 33:21]
There is no doubt that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) lived in a society similar to our society, especially before his mission (peace be upon him), because it was a society of the pre-Islamic age of ignorance, with no Shari'ah and no morals except what they had inherited from their fathers in small fragments, who had received some of what Ibrahim (peace be upon him) and his son Isma'il (peace be upon him) were upon. The customs of the pre-Islamic age of ignorance were like our customs today.
Some of them would stand up for others when the one entering the gathering came in,
But the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family), who said on one hand:
I was only sent to perfect noble morals.
Sunan al-Bayhaqi 18:249
and whose Lord of the worlds addressed him with His saying:
And indeed, you are upon a great character
, was complete and perfected this matter concerning morals. For this reason, one of his Companions who was constantly with him and who had dedicated themselves to serving him (peace and blessings be upon him) described him, namely Anas ibn Malik, who served the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) for ten years. His mother brought him to him when he was young, so he grew up and matured in the presence of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) and in his service. This noble Companion lived longer than most of the Companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) in terms of a long life, because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) had prayed for him for a long life, abundance of wealth, and blessing in it. Therefore, some of his orchards would bear fruit twice a year. This was known in Medina, and he alone was known for it. He had more than one hundred children from his own loins and the loins of his sons during his lifetime, until he would say that his daughter so-and-so informed him that he now has more than one hundred children. He would speak about his daughter, who informed him, because it was difficult for him to keep count. What Allah willed, he lived and died with the longest life among the Companions, a blessed life. This is what he used to say (may Allah be pleased with him):
No one was more beloved to him than the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and they would not stand up for him because they knew his dislike of it.
And they would not stand up for him because they knew his dislike of it. Thus was his Sunnah (recommended practice) (peace and blessings be upon him) with his noble Companions.
They did not stand up for him, why? Not because his Companions did not desire it, but rather they loved to honor him by every means. However, at the same time, they did not deviate from pleasing him (peace and blessings be upon him), because that was their goal, for the reason that it leads them to the pleasure of Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He), as Allah the Exalted said:
He who obeys the Messenger has obeyed Allah
[An-Nisa 4:80]
