Q: Some Muslims in my country, Mozambique, have expressed a desire to dedicate the time after the 'Isha' prayer on Thursdays of every week for the collective recitation of the prayer upon the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Is such an act prescribed?
A: The prayer and peace upon the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) are prescribed and encouraged, and there is great reward in them. However, it must be performed in the prescribed manner. Designating a specific time for it or a specific form without evidence is considered a forbidden religious innovation. Therefore, what was mentioned in the question regarding designating a time for it after the 'Isha' prayer, or performing it collectively, is all a forbidden religious innovation. This is based on the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):Sunan Abi Dawud 4607Sahih (Al-Albani) and his saying (peace and blessings be upon him): Sahih Muslim 1718b narrated by Muslim in his (Sahih) from 'A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her). In another wording from him (peace and blessings be upon him), he said: Sahih Muslim 1718a It is agreed upon as authentic. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and peace upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
