"Amid" means to remove, in both word and meaning. Harm is anything that causes people distress on the road, whether it is something that obstructs travel according to the situation of today. For example, we observe that some car owners park their cars across the road, thereby obstructing traffic; this is not permissible. It is obligatory that a Muslim not obstruct the road. Rather, this hadith commands that one should remove anything that obstructs travel on the road, even if it is simple things like the things people trip over on the road, such as thorns, stones, banana peels, and the like of what causes people distress.
