A Note on Matters Attributed to the Hadith That Are Not Intended by the Hadith of al-Nu'as ibn Sim'an al-Ansari: (

The Shaykh : But before I conclude this hadith, it is necessary to remind you of an important point so that this hadith is not misunderstood. This hadith applies to all matters in which there is no explicit text in the Shari'ah forbidding or permitting them. As we explained previously, this hadith applies to things that are unknown to us. Otherwise, if we do not interpret the hadith in this way, a great door of waswasah (whispers of doubt) will open for people. Many people are afflicted with this: "This food I eat, this clothing I wear, there is something in it, perhaps there is something in it." There must be a valid reason for this scrupulousness; otherwise, mere waswasah is not from the Most Merciful, but from Shaytan. If we apply this discussion to fiqh (Islamic jurisprudence) matters in which scholars and jurists have disagreed since ancient times, what was said previously applies here. If we know a text in the Book or the Sunnah forbidding something, it is not permissible to hesitate about it as long as there is a text forbidding it. If we know a text in the Book or the Sunnah permitting something else, it is not permissible for a Muslim to be scrupulous about doing it. However, if the matter is difficult for us due to the abundance of disagreement among jurists, and the evidence for prohibition or the evidence for permission is not clear to us, then this hadith applies: Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 14:37.
