The questioner : Regarding al-A'mash and Baqiyyah ibn al-Walid!

The Shaykh : What?

The questioner : Regarding al-A'mash, in which rank of the ranks of tadlis is he? And does Baqiyyah ibn al-Walid commit tadlis al-taswiyyah?

The Shaykh : As for al-A'mash, we follow the practice of al-Bukhari and Muslim and the majority of scholars who practically accepted his "an'anah" (reporting with "from"), unless there is some hesitation regarding the authenticity or weakness of the hadith. In that case, the researcher stops to search for a defect in the chain of narration. If he finds nothing other than the "an'anah" and it is necessary to invalidate the hadith due to some contradiction, he then relies on al-A'mash's "an'anah." Otherwise, the default is to smooth it out. As for Baqiyyah ibn al-Walid, his "an'anah" is the one known as "an'anah al-isnad" (chain reporting), not "an'anah al-tadlis" (reporting with concealment).
