The Shaykh’s reading from the book *Al-Targhib wa al-Tarhib* by al-Mundhiri, in the Book of Prayer, and his commentary on it

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : In the name of Allah, and may peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah.
Al-Hafiz al-Mundhiri says in the book *Al-Targhib wa al-Tarhib*, and in the fourth chapter of the Book of Prayer in *Sahih al-Targhib wa al-Tarhib*: "Warning against leaving the mosque after the adhan without an excuse".
The author (may Allah have mercy on him) cited in this chapter some of the hadiths that serve as the heading for the chapter, and some of them are weak. Since our book is specifically concerned with what is authentic and established, we stated that it was narrated, meaning the hadith of Abu Hurayrah in the other book with number so-and-so, by Muslim, Abu Dawud, al-Tirmidhi, al-Nasa'i, and Ibn Majah, excluding his statement:
The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) commanded us
Musnad Ahmad 1021, 1022Lts isnad is Hasan], Isnad is Hasan like the one above] (Darussalam)
to the end.
Here is a commentary: I said: The wording of Muslim will come in the twentieth chapter, "Warning against abandoning the congregational prayer." There, the authentic wording is from Abu al-Shu'tha al-Muharibi, who said:
Abu Sha'tha' said: We were sitting with Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) in the mosque when the Mu'adhdhin proclaimed the Adhan. A man stood up in the mosque and started walking out. Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) stared at him till he went out of the mosque. Upon this Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) said: Indeed, this man has disobeyed Abul-Qasim (ﷺ). [Muslim] .
Riyad as-Salihin 1785
and it was narrated by Muslim and others, and it was mentioned earlier in the weak hadiths with number so-and-so, in the narration of Ahmad.
This narration, which is from the weak section of *Al-Targhib*, contains:
That the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) commanded us not to leave the mosque after the adhan
The difference between the authentic narration narrated by Muslim and the weak narration narrated by Ahmad is that Muslim’s narration from Abu Hurayrah is:
That when he saw the man leave the mosque after the adhan, Abu Hurayrah said: This man has disobeyed Abu al-Qasim
, whereas in Ahmad’s weak narration, Abu Hurayrah said:
It was narrated that Ibn 'Abbas said: "The Messenger of Allah commanded us to perform ablution properly."
Sunan Ibn Majah 426Hasan (Darussalam)
The difference is in the wording, not in the meaning. This is the first hadith, and it is from the hadith of Abu Hurayrah, and the authentic wording is Abu Hurayrah’s statement:
he has indeed disobeyed Abul Qasim
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 204Sahih (Darussalam)

Then he mentioned other hadiths that support this meaning, and it contains some warning appropriate to the chapter. He said: "And from him, meaning Abu Hurayrah, it was narrated that he said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
No one hears the call in this mosque of mine and then leaves it except for a need, and then does not return to it, except a hypocrite
It was narrated by al-Tabarani in *Al-Awsat*, and its narrators are relied upon in the authentic collections"

There is an elaboration in the discussion of this tracing that is not the place to mention now. The point is that this hadith clarifies that the one who leaves the mosque after hearing the adhan without a need that compels him to leave is a hypocrite. If he left for a need with the intention of returning to the mosque, this description of him as a hypocrite is negated, because he only left the mosque for a need that pressed upon him to leave. As long as he left with the intention of returning and actually returned, it is not correct to say that he is a hypocrite.
Likewise, the other hadiths he cited after the hadith of Abu Hurayrah. He said: "And it was narrated from Uthman ibn Affan (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said:
Whoever hears the Adhan when he is in the mosque, then goes out and does not go out for any (legitimate) need and does not intend to return, is a hypocrite.
Sunan Ibn Majah 734Da'if (Darussalam)
"
This is the same meaning as the first hadith, and therefore the first hadith testifies to this hadith, and by this consideration it was authenticated.
Similarly, the last hadith in the chapter is his statement from Sa'id ibn al-Musayyib (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said:
No one should leave the mosque after the call to prayer except a hypocrite, except one who is compelled by a need and intends to return.
.
The point between this hadith, which came through several routes and contains the ruling of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) that the one who leaves the mosque without a need is a hypocrite, and the hadith of Abu Hurayrah where he said:
he has indeed disobeyed Abul Qasim
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 204Sahih (Darussalam)
There is no doubt that everyone who is described as a hypocrite is a sinner, but not every sinner can correctly be described as a hypocrite. Therefore, there is a difference between the hadith of Abu Hurayrah and the second narration and the other narrations that came from others (may Allah be pleased with them). They all agree that the one who leaves the mosque after the adhan without a need is a hypocrite, unless he left for a need and intended to return to the mosque.
There is no doubt that this ruling issued by the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) regarding the one who leaves the mosque after the adhan is what the generalities of the Shari'ah require. It is established in *Sahih Muslim* from Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said:
We used to declare to be a hypocrite anyone who heard the call to prayer and did not go out to the prayer.
There is no difference between the one who did not come to the mosque for the congregational prayer and has no excuse, and the one who attended the mosque, then heard the call and left without intending anything, neither leaving due to a need nor intending to return to the mosque to catch the congregational prayer. You have known, if Allah wills, that its ruling is obligatory and that its virtue is twenty-seven degrees. So the one who leaves the mosque is as if he has preferred to abandon this reward and the obedience of Allah and His Messenger in implementing such as the saying of Allah the Exalted:
And establish prayer and give zakah and bow with those who bow [in worship and obedience].
[Al-Baqarah 2:43]
