What is your opinion of al-Ghazali, who has begun to attack Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim and reject some of the hadiths with his intellect?

The questioner : There is another matter, O Shaykh.

The Shaykh : Yes

The questioner : May Allah reward you with good.
Regarding al-Ghazali, he has started speaking about the hadiths. You know his exposure of some hadiths, even in Sahih Muslim. Any hadith that contradicts his opinion, he says, "Put it under your foot." One of them is the hadith
That my father and your father are in the Fire أن أباي وأباك في النار
This occurred during the discussion of a master's thesis in Algeria, and he made this statement, and he has others besides this.

The Shaykh : How did he say it?

The questioner : He said, when he was asked about the hadith
That my father and your father are in the Fire إن أباي وأباك في النار
which is in Sahih Muslim.

The Shaykh : Excuse me, it is not correct to say "my father."

The questioner : This is the saying of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). He said to the one who spoke about the matter of seeking forgiveness:
That my father and your father are in the Fire إن أباي وأباك في النار
I do not say the saying of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) about myself.
The student: "My father" or "my father"?

The Shaykh : It is the wording of the Messenger (may Allah bless him and grant him peace)
My father إن أبي

The questioner : Ah, perhaps I made a mistake in this, "my father" and "your father."

The Shaykh : No, memorize it, no, perhaps.

The questioner : The important thing in this hadith.

The Shaykh : What did he say?

The questioner : He said about this hadith, "Put it under your foot."

The Shaykh : I seek refuge in Allah.

The questioner : And this is available to us on a tape. This is the other matter. May Allah keep you safe. His attacks on the ahad (singular) hadiths, indeed his exposure of Sahih al-Bukhari and his speech about it, and Sahih Muslim. And yet, he sometimes returns to argue with hadiths that are either weak or fabricated.

The Shaykh : I am done.

The questioner : And we find people who drum for him. May Allah reward you with good. If you would point out some of his errors.

The Shaykh : We have pointed this out in many gatherings in your country on this occasion. There is no gathering where we do not speak about it, either initially as mentioned before, or in response to a question.
And in Madinah, the city of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), we delivered a long speech about this al-Ghazali. We addressed his denial of some authentic hadiths that he denied. I have looked at some of the responses written against him, but the time does not allow me to cover them and what is in them.
And among these hadiths that I know he denied is this authentic hadith
Verily my father and your father are in the Fire. إن أبي وأباك في النار
Sahih Muslim 203
I spoke about the fiqh of the hadith, and that it does not contradict the saying of Allah the Exalted
And never would We punish until We sent a messenger. وما كنا معذبين حتى نبعث رسولا
[Al-Isra 17:15]

And that this al-Ghazali and others of the predecessors who say that the Arabs in the pre-Islamic age of ignorance were from the people of the period (of no accountability), I refuted this in that lecture. It is a very long lecture, and it is all about what you asked me about now. But the truth is, we agreed with some of our brothers to stay with you until ten-thirty, and it was almost half past, but nevertheless, we will extend the mentioned time a little so that we can answer something of this question.
