The questioner : The Complete Ten Questions by Abu al-Hasanat Muhammad ibn 'Abd al-Hay al-Laknawi and The Rule of Critique and Vindication by Taj al-Din al-Subki: Are these books edited and relied upon?

The Shaykh : Yes, are they not the ones on which 'Abd al-Fattah Abu Ghuddah wrote a commentary?

The questioner : Yes, O Shaykh.

The Shaykh : One should turn away from the commentaries except for the rare ones, and rely on what is in the main text, which is by Abu al-Hasanat al-Laknawi. For this man, in truth, is a distinguished scholar, one of the rare scholars of the Hanafi school in India in his time. In my opinion, had he not died before reaching old age, he would have benefited the Muslim community more, and his books would have been more mature and better. This book, or these books, in the science of terminology, indicates first his memory and second the precision of his observations. The notes he mentioned in the chapters of the book *Al-Ajwibah* are very useful and important for beginners in the science of hadith and its terminology.
